We decided to allow our baby to use pacifiers because the use of a pacifier at bedtime has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS and it is also a way to satisfy his need to suckle after feeding time. We have been using the NUK brand of pacifiers, but we purchased a pack of Soothies made by the FIRST YEARS company, and to avoid disaster we opened these up, sterilized it and offered it to our little bundle. He had tossed all 3 of his NUK pacifiers on the floor within minutes of each other. My baby simply put, is not a fan of this style of pacifier. I think maybe it is shaped too similarly to a nipple from a bottle, which just disappoints him when he is not getting food from the pacifier. I also found the Soothies to be confusing as to how to give it to him, which side goes up? The side with the part you grasp to hold it, or does this side go down in babies mouth? I gave it a rating of a 4 because a few friends of mine rave about these pacifiers, and they have had much luck with this brand, I acknowledge that every baby is different, but to be honest, my little guy is not a fan of the Soothies brand of pacifiers. We paid $3 ish for a 2 pack at Wal-mart. That is affordable, but in the future I will stick with the NUK brand of pacifiers.
