If you are looking for picture books that will take your breath away, look no further than those illustrated by Eloise Wilkin. The one I am reviewing here is My Goodnight Book, a Golden Sturdy Shape Book.
My Goodnight Book was originally published by Little Golden Books in 1981. The irresistable little girl on the cover was the first thing that caught my eye when I first purchased this book in the 1990s. I had to know what was inside. And what a feast for the eyes this book is!
I find this to be a delightful little book in every way. The words are simple and perfect for each illustration. It is a pleasure to read and kids love it. My Goodnight Book takes us through a little girl's evening as she gets ready for bed. The first page is adorable as she is removing her sock. A breeze flows through an open window and sheer white curtains billow softly against a big fluffy bear.
The drawings are so delicate and pretty. One scene shows the little girl brushing her teeth in the cutest pajamas. On the following page, daddy reads our little girl a story. Next, the little girl says her prayers before Mommy tucks her into a pink patchwork quilt covered bed.
And finally, on the last page, when our little girl is nodding off to sleep, I want to crawl into the storybook and be part of the most breathtakingly beautiful little girl's bedroom.
This book stands about 11" high. It is almost one-half inch thick. The pages, being the strong board book type, can withstand many page turnings by sleepy and not so sleepy little hands.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I very highly recommend it. My Goodnight book is a real treasure.
