My son was plagued with ear infections during his first year. We had tubes put in his ears and his second year was remarkably different with no ear infections. Last summer the tubes fell out and within a month he had two ear infections within three weeks. We were then faced with replacing the tubes at considerable cost to us and a fair amount of discomfort and inconvenience for my son.
So, I decided to try natural remedies for a while. I had read a lot about the antibiotic powers of garlic and found ear drops made by Equinox botanicals that contained garlic oil and mullein. I was instructed to put a few drops in each ear at the first sign of discomfort. Within a few weeks our natural remedy was put to the test. My son (now almost three) did not seem to mind the drops being placed in his ear (they tickled, he said). Within an hour he was no longer complaining of pain.
I would normally be skeptical of such a wonderous medicine, especially of the homeopathic variety. However, a few weeks ago I, myself, woke up with an ear ache. I decided to try the garlic oil and mullein drops myself (my son was right, it did tickle) and was amazed that within half an hour the pain that I'd had all morning was completely gone.
We are six months past our decision to not have his tubes replaced and have used the garlic oil ear drops a handful of times. They have worked effectively each time and I highly recommend them as an alternative medicine for addressing ear pain. If my son had signs of an ear infection (fever, pain, drainage), I would certainly take him to a doctor, but caught early on this oil seems to head off serious infection.
