Our son wanted a toy gun that functions like the gun in the video game Portal, it's part of The Orange Box for the XBox 360. If you could guess, this portal gun creates portals, and it does so by shooting glowing ammunition at walls and the like.

The Nerf N-Strike® Firefly REV-8™ turned out to be a great option. Though it takes him a little effort to load and fire, the results are motivating enough to make him put in the work.

First things first, when you first open the gun, you must do the following two things:

1) Wrap the suction darts in the provided glow in the dark stickers, and

2) Insert two AA batteries, which are NOT included.

Then you turn the on switch, and use the trigger to help load the front barrel with suction darts. Every time you pull the trigger, the gun lets off a burst of light. I believe these ensure the suction darts will really glow in the dark. In order for the darts to shoot, however, you have to pull back another lever on the toy, and you must do this before each shot. I appreciated this safety option, but a smaller child might be frustrated if pulling the lever back is too tough. It's just on the verge of being too much for my almost-6 year old.

I was very surprised at the gun's power and range. It easily hits a target 20 ft away. I was also (pleasantly) surprised that the gun didn't make any obnoxious additional, unnecessary noises. With three kids, we have enough noise in the house without their toys chattering at us. The suction darts glow quite brightly too, but they don't stick very well.

All in all, I'd say this is a quality Nerf product, and I would buy it again.
