The New River Gorge Bridge holds some sentiment for us. My husband attended Bible School in the late 1970's in Bradley, West Vrginia. It was during that time that the bridge began to be built. Before it was built, the trip across the New River was long, tedious and a little dangerous at spots. We had to travel it one time when he had to preach at a church on the other side.. NEVER AGAIN!!!! Yikes!
It's a steel arch bridge and for many years it was the longest in the world. It's over 3, 000 feet long and it's over 800 feet high. Route 19 is the River Gorge Bridge.
I don't really like heights that much, but it's very interesting now to see how huge the supports are to hold up this bridge.
If I remember correctly I think that a man died while we were down there during the construction phase. Very dangerous work, but it's well worth the trip to see something like this in the US.
