New Super Mario Brothers suffers from the same problem I outlined in my Mario Kart and Zelda:Phantom Hourglass reviews. It simply does not add to much to the table. Sure, its attractive 3D/2D graphics are appealing and new powerups like the huge mushroom are nice, it is really the same 2D sidescrolling Mario we have been playing since the 80s. Not that that is a bad thing, mind you. It maintains it's charm and that makes it fun for everyone. One of the better new things is the multiplayer, where you and a friend compete head to head collecting stars. There are only a few different arenas here though, and I would have liked to see more. On top of that, there is a minigame collection similar to the one that was in Super Mario 64 DS, which only adds to my "Nintendo likes to rehash old things" philosophy. All in all, this is a very good game that deserves a spot in your DS collection.
