When we built our home 4 years ago, we knew we had to get a good gate to go at the top of our stairs. One of those gates that just adjusts and can be pushed over was not going to do the trick for us. We did extensive research and found that the Evenflo Top of the Stairs hinged gate was one of the best rated gates. We bought it for only $35 (small price to pay for our children's safety!) and my husband installed it quite easily. For the hinged side, it has brackets that screw into the wall and you slide the gate in from the top. The other side of the get where it latches, also has 2 parts that screw into the wall. Where it latches, you actually put the bottom of the gate into the notch and the top part also goes into a notch. BUT, here is that trick that little kids can't do: to get the gate undone, you have to squeeze up on the top part because there is actually a notch that settles into the the bracket on the wall. I know that this sounds complicated, but really, it is so easy! My 6 year old can use this gate, which is nice because he can let himself down the stairs and relatch the gate so the younger two children can't get down. This gate also slides so you can fit it in many different sized door openings or stairways. Evenflo did a great job with this gate, making it very durable, yet, adult friendly. I can't tell you how many baby gates we have bought and fought with! Do yourself a favor and get this great gate. You won't be sorry!
