My dream has always been to publish a fiction book. I know many other people feel the same way because Print-On-Demand self-publishing through services like lulu.com is doing well.
I wanted an easy way to develop a community where self-publishing authors could exchange manuscripts, editing skills, create book publicity together, and participate in discussions. This meant I needed to develop an interactive site. I've created many sites before using HTML, and Dreamweaver, but my knowledge fell short for what I needed to accomplish.
Finally, I found PHP Nuke. In fact, it was available in my Yahoo domain menu, but I had passed it up several times not realizing its potential. PHP Nuke is an open source software program that makes it easy to create dynamic, interactive communities on your web domain. I was easily able to log into my administration page and customize my community exactly the way I wanted it with a few simple clicks. Now people can go to my site, create personalized journal pages, upload content, write articles, and participate in community forums. It only took me one day to get it published and ready for visitors.
There are still a few tweaks I want to add to customize it to my needs, and the great part is that new add-ons are created all the time by PHP Nuke enthusiasts. It's really amazing what you can do for free as an artist if you are willing to spend the extra time.
Of course, there is a price. PHP Nuke logos will remain on your finished site enless you pay for a license to have it removed. However, I don't mind advertising for such a great tool.
