When I was shopping around for a DVD recorder there were some things I was looking for specifically.
One of the things I needed was a player that had the ability to play DIVx format DVD's. This feature is the reason behind the expense of this machine. The first machine I purchased had to be returned because it broke down during recording. It locked up like a computer does and would do nothing even after being unplugged and plugged back in. I was transfering home movies to DVD. Best buy was great because they replaced the unit completely. I was very satisfied. They said they wanted to find out why it broke so quickly since I had not had the unit for very long.
Yes, warranties are good!!!
Great things about this unit are:
We have this unit hooked up to a bunch of different things such as a vcr, tv and hd receiver and you can record from all of them, even a camcorder. You can put the disc format (DVD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD RAM Single or double sided, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL) you want into the unit and hit record. Its that easy. The one touch feature to choose how long you would like to record (1, 2, 4, 6 hours) is wonderful. This unit also plays cd's (including CD-R, CD-RW) containing jpeg's, mp3's or divx files. This unit will also play SD cards (jpeg format) (8mb - 2GB, SDHC Memory card - 4 GB, MiniSD card with adaptor) from your digital camera. We have a 46" tv so this feature is wonderful for family slideshows.
Another great feature of this unit is its ability to play DIVx DVD's. I received a gift of DVD's formatted this way so for me this feature was a must. The DVD's play in any player we have in the house and we have 3 different brands of players. You can name the disc and the menus are easy to learn. The directions accompanying this unit are extensive and easy to read.
The remote is large and may be overwhelming at first but really is easy to use once you get used to how it is formatted. This unit also upconverts when it is recording which means that your old home movies and their 10 year old quality will look better when transfered to DVD.
This unit also has a digital receiver which, I was told, will be important for when tv signals go from analogue to all digital. I could not possibly name all the features of the DVD recorder but I have named as many as I could that I use and love.
In reference to the first unit purchased being returned, the second unit purchased, I still have and is working the way it is supposed to! I LOVE this unit!
The only drawback for me in reference to this unit is how many screens you have to go through to get to the format screen and the S video cable is not included.
Good luck in your research. I hope this has been a help to you.
