I was assigned to read this book in a Texas History course I was taking, and I was really dreading it. I actually put it off until the last minute. I was pleasantly surprised though when I did finally sit down and read it. While it is not the type of book, I would normally read, it was not that bad.
It is a factual book of Texas history, but the author, James L Haley, manages to tell the tales of Texas long ago in a pretty good narration that I was able to follow. If you are at all interested in Texas History, you will find that this is a great book - much better than the Texas History book I was issued in junior high. It included lots of interesting facts that I did not know. In fact, after the class was over, I actually went back and read this book for simple pleasure, and enjoyed it much more the second time when I wasn't taking notes and such.
I found this book very interesting and like I said, I did read it twice. I think anyone who is a history buff or just interested in Texas, will find it a great page turner.
