During the reconstruction of my new home, most of the lawn had been torn up and I had huge patches of dirt everywhere. I also have some very old wild cherry and maple trees in my front yard that block out most of the sunlight. So I went to Lowe's and I searched their racks for the most shade-tolerant grass seed that I could find, and that turned out to be Pennington Shady Lawn Grass Seed Mixture. I didn't want to spend too much money on a product when I wasn't sure it would work, so I just picked up a 5 pound bag. I spread it out by hand in October of 2008 beneath my wild cherry and maple tree to see how well the grass would grow and establish itself before winter.
And boy, was I ever pleased with the results by the spring of 2009, so I went back to Lowe's to buy some more for the rest of my shady yard areas. Pennington Shady Lawn Grass Seed Mixture of tall and fine fescue has low sun tolerance but very good shade tolerance, and is moderately drought tolerant. It has good disease resistance, good traffic tolerance, and will grow in all climate zones.
