Being a nanny, I see my fair share of children's videos. A recent favourite of the little guy I watch is Imagine With Me, in the Play With Me Sesame series.
In this movie, all of our favourite friends from Sesame Street come to together for 50 minutes of fun and using their imaginations. Cookie Monster wants to eat imaginary cookies, but first he must stir the imaginary batter, roll the dough, cut it with cookie cutters, bake it in the oven, and then blow on them to cool them down. Elmo and Zoe imagine what their perfect best friend would be like--and then realize that they already have the perfect best friends--each other. And so on...
There is general learning along the way, such as matching pairs. And ultimately, children learn about their imaginations and how to use them. When Ernie is afraid at bedtime, he learns that the great thing about his imagination is that he can use it any time to think of nice things. Grover, on the other hand, has a very active imagination, and starts to get scared (he was on the moon all by himself!). He learns that another great thing about imaginations, is you can stop using them whenever you need to. All of this is taught in true Sesame Street form with cute puppets, fun rhymes, and music that draws little ones in.
I thought that 50 minutes would be a bit long, but this movie actually holds the little boy's attention very well. The way that Sesame Street movies can change from thing to thing to hold attention while still building up the theme and reinforcing the main point, is terrific.
I think children around two and a half to three years old will really get the full benefit of this movie, because they can imagine along and follow the actions. However, the boy I care for is only a year and a half, and he thoroughly enjoys it as well. He giggles when he sees his favourite characters, and grooves to the music.
Overall, a delightful movie to introduce to your little ones!
I didn't purchase this one personally, but I found it on Amazon for $13.49.
