Hdl Statin Health Medications Prescription

If your total cholesterol count is 240 milligrams per deciliter and you have other predicting factors for heart disease your doctor will probably talk to you about cholesterol lowering medicine. One such medicine is classified as statins. Some of the better known medicines are atorvastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, and rosuvastatin. If these medicines do not sound familiar than their brand names such as Zocor, Lipitor, Crestor and Pravastatin are probably recognizable from advertisements on television or in magazines.

Statins, not only work to lower you cholesterol, but they may even work to reduce plaque on your arteries. Lowering cholesterol levels is important because high levels of cholesterol can lead to coronary artery disease and coronary heart disease. These diseases lead to heart attacks, strokes or death.

When I went to the doctor he told me my cholesterol was high and I should be taking a statin. I was worried about this as I had seen heart attacks in my family medical history.

Statins are available by prescription only. The drug he prescribed for me is Pravastatin. Pravastatin, also known by its brand name Pravachol, is made by Bristol-Myers Squibb. This medicine is supposed to control how much cholesterol my body makes.

The risk of side effects with statin drugs are minimal and do not occur very often according to articles I have read. You should always discuss with the doctor other medicines you are taking and what cholesterol medicine you should take. Also always discuss potential side effects and things you should watch for when taking this medicine. Some medicines will require you to take an occasional blood test.

Side effects that have been reported are: nausea, vomiting, a cold / flu, headaches, diarrhea or constipation, rash, fatigue, dizziness, gas, heartburn, or muscle pain. Any side effects should be reported, immediately, to a doctor.

Medicine alone is not always the cure for lowering your cholesterol. You still need to lower your cholesterol by avoiding stress, eating healthy, not smoking and exercising.

I like this medicine. It is fairly cheap. At Walmart’s pharmacies, Pravastatin is on the four dollar medicine list.

Also, for me, this medicine has brought my cholesterol level way down. My doctor was very surprised at my last cholesterol check. It had actually dropped almost a hundred points. This is a medicine I will continue to take.

Warning: This is not to be taken as medical advice. Everyone should talk to their doctor about cholesterol.
