Wouldn’t it be fun if there really were a little twisted pretzel inside the new Pretzel M&Ms? Of course it’s just a round pretzel nub, but it’s really in there. However, I don’t think they got it quite right; I don’t care for the taste very much. And yet, I was unable to stop eating them, and ate an entire 9.9 oz. bag in two sittings. This does not bode well for further purchases.
I finally succumbed to the temptation to give these much-advertized treats a try. They are exactly what the package advertizes: “crunchy, salty, sweet.” There is a small, round pretzel inside the familiar M&M chocolate, covered with the colored candy coatings in red, blue, green, brown, and orange. Orange is the spokes-candy for this variety. I’m sure you’ve seen him displaying the x-ray screen in front of his tummy, and looking rather sheepish.
To be honest, I don’t think that they got the balance of chocolate to pretzel quite right in this candy. I wanted more chocolate flavor. The crunchiness was good, but I thought that the salt overwhelmed the M&M taste. But it apparently didn’t matter what they tasted like, because I could not stop eating them. I managed to hold off once, and didn’t eat the entire bag on the first day. However, I finished it off on the following day. This is not good. If I’m going to have chocolate (which I love) it’s got to be in a form where I can discipline myself to eat a reasonable amount and then stop.
I was fairly appalled that I couldn’t stop shoveling these in, when my brain was saying, “You don’t even like them all that much; just stop!” Research is showing, more and more, that sugar, salt, and fat, eaten together, can trigger chemical changes in the brain making foods high in that mixture addictive. Dr. David Kessler, in particular, is studying this. See “Crave Man, ” Washington Post. Pretzel M&Ms have that perfect mix and I’m here to tell you– I could not stop eating them.
A serving of the Pretzel M&Ms is considered to be 17 pieces, with 180 calories. Each serving has 6 g fat, 20 g of sugar, and 180 mg of sodium. If I could stop at 17 pieces, it wouldn’t be much of a problem. But since I can’t, I won’t be buying these again.
