I went in search of a white board to fasten to our refrigerator, and this one looks like it will stand up to the use.

You might say that a white board is a white board is a.... and I would have pretty much agreed with you. However, the cheap board we had on our refrigerator had warped. The magnet on the back held it in place as long as you didn’t want to write anything. But as soon as you put pressure on it to write, since it was warped and had one magnet strip, it would fall to the floor. Needless to say, it wasn’t being used. So I went in search of something better.

I wanted a small board. This one comes in 8.5 x 11 inches (as well as larger sizes). This was perfect. I wanted one that was not so likely to warp. This one has a plastic frame around the edge to keep it rigid. I wanted to spend only a small amount of money. The $8.99 price tag on this one turned me away, until I saw that it was on a 50% off table! So, for $4.49 I feel that I got my money’s worth.

When I got home, I learned that the product was better than I had realized. First of all, it comes with both sticky mounting squares, and magnetic squares so that you can fasten it where you need it with either of those options without buying more items. Second... I could have seen this through the packaging, but didn’t notice that the black marker that comes with it has an “eraser” end on it, so that you can swipe old entries off without getting your finger black. The marker is held in place by a plastic clip on the edge of the board. Third, since I was only interested in the white board aspect, I didn’t realize that this board must have a piece of metal sandwiched behind the white board. It comes with two magnets, and you can stick paper notes to the board with those. Since I mounted it on my refrigerator this hardly matters to me– I have square feet of metal surface– but above a desk this might be quite handy.

It also comes in at least three colors if this is an issue for you. I bought one with a purple edge. There were also green and orange ones in the store.

Of course I wanted more colors of markers, so had to buy a separate set of those. They are a different barrel size than the pen that comes with it, so when the supplied one with the eraser end dries out that eraser cap won’t fit on the common Expo brand markers. And now we have to keep a cup or something near the fridge to store those colored markers.

The fact that the frame makes it stick out about 1/2 inch from the surface it is mounted on makes it difficult to write on near the edges.

The marker clip looks like it might break fairly easily.

Even though I thought this was a bit pricey, it looks significantly better than dollar store white boards which have already proven to be inadequate. So far I am very pleased with my purchase, but might be less sure if I had paid full price.
