I love baseball. I like watching it, playing it, and collecting baseball stuff. Recently I went to purchase some new baseballs and decided on taking the cheap route and purchased some Rawlings Official League Baseballs. My opinion of these is mixed.
One good thing about these balls is the price; they were only $12.99 for 10 balls. They come in a mesh bag which makes storing and carrying them easy as well. They are the same size as real baseballs and if you just need something to play catch with or use for practice they are fine. But that is about it for the good points.
The negatives include many things. First these balls are made of synthetic leather rather than real leather. I wasn’t expecting real quality for the price but I was still disappointed. The surface is much more slippery than a regular ball and the ball itself is also softer than a regular baseball. Not a lot, but you can squeeze it and mark it up much easier. While it isn’t a big deal for just messing around this could be an issue in any formal competitive games. In fact, I wouldn’t think this ball would qualify for use in any league, not even little league. I also used a few of thee balls to get autographs on as I collect those. What a mistake. The ink from the pens starts to absorb into the cheaper material and fades after awhile unlike a real major league ball. After sometime the autographs become very hard to read and are basically worthless. I am glad I didn’t use than for any autographs of real value or I would have been even more upset.
Overall these baseballs are fine if you just want something cheap to throw around or practice batting with. If you need them for any real games or want to have someone sign it like I occasionally do than please don’t buy these. They are cheap, and you really get what you pay for with these, not much quality.
