I was recently hired to design a cake for my former next door neighbors son's birthday. The theme for the party was Ancient Egypt. The first thing that came to mind was to make a pyramid cake but that alone would have been boring. I decided to make a pyramid and add a scene around the base of it using Ancient Egyptian people or figures. I am not very good at figure making yet so I needed to find some pre-made pieces to use on the cake. I remembered that I had seen some figures at Michels' Arts and Crafts so I went over to see if they had what I needed.
What I found were a collection of miniature figurines called Toobs that are made by Safari LTD. There are 45 different Toob theme sets in all and the Michael's I was in actually carried about half of them. The set I bought is called the Ancient Egypt Toob. It has 12 PVC figures that range in size from 1.5" to 3". Included in the set are Nefertiti, Bastet, Tutan Khamen, Isis, Amulet, Mummy Case, Scarab, Pyramids, Sphinx, Thoth, Anubis and a Heiroglyph tablet. They perfectly fit the theme and were the perfect scale for the cake. The detail on the pieces is excellent and the colors are beautiful. According to the company, they are professionally sculpted and hand painted. They do not move in any way or have any posable parts.
Some of the other Safari LTD sets are:
Knights and Dragons
and many more
The sets all come in a resealable acetate tube that has a carry strap and are phthalate-free and safety tested. The recommended age for them is 3+.
These sets are not only perfect for cake decorating but would be fun for kids, like Matthew, who have an interest in toys that are not common or popular and are hard to find in traditional play sets. These would also be great for school projects or dioramas because they are the right scale and their details are accurate.
I am so happy I found these sets. I will definitely be using them again in my cake decorating and in any projects my kids might need something like this for. I have included some pictures of them on the finished cake to show you how they look. The figures in the set are show in the second picture.
