I must admit, since I've started playing the Silent Hill games on my PS2 I've been hooked. From those of you who love the horror genre (movies, survival games and such) and haven't played the games in this series, you have to give them a try. The only way that I can describe them is, Silent Hill is sort of like, the Twighlight Zone meets Clive Barker's Hellraiser. Characters all lured to the hellish town, all having some connection to it in one way or another, and all doomed to face their mysterious fate. This includes this installment of the series as well, Silent Hill 3. Although I started playing the series with Silent Hill 2 and went to Silent Hill Origins, I kept noticing Silent Hill 3 on the Gamestop shelf and it kept popping out at me as interesting. First and foremost because of the fact the main character is female, which is different than the others with the lead being men. Also, the new areas of the town to explore, like the amusement park and the mall made it even more enticing. So I bought it and took it home and dove right in, but my excitement turned to disappointment. No sort of pre-story scenario to warm you up, it thrusts you right into the dark side of Silent Hill, which turns out to be a dream. So that didn't leave me much of a feel for the main character, Heather, or had that pull to keep me interested to follow her story.
The game play was very off compared to the others, Heather's movements were very different than lead characters in the other games, jerky movement and harder to control. The items as well, I found she had a hard time wielding weapons and her attacks and defenses weren't as fluid as the others as well. It's a shame too because the game is so promising! I just think they dropped the ball on this one and could have tweaked it a bit more before releasing it. I was so dissatisfied, I took it back for a refund. Who knows though, I might give it another go at a later date, right now it's not for me though. Check it out for yourself though, but I suggest you play some of the games prior to Silent Hill 3 to see what I'm talking about. Hope you enjoy it!
