I'm no expert, by ANY stretch of the imagination, on baby products. However, I'm very satisfied with this product. My grandmother recently had surgery on her foot, so we use this monitor (which has been around this house for at least a few years, so I know it isn't brand new) to allow her to call us when she needs something.

Each piece of the monitor system is in literally opposite corners of the house--I listen in from the living room while my grandmother rests in her bedroom. There's a volume control on the right-hand side that lets you go from completely silent to loud enough to transmit her voice clearly in spite of a blaring TV. The sound itself is very clear. I can understand completely everything she says--intentionally or in casual conversation--as well as, to my dismay, the toilet flushing down the hall from time to time.

Two lights on the front side let you know the status of the battery charge and whether or not the monitor is actually on. You can also operate the monitor system while it's plugged into the wall, thus preserving the battery life. There's also a handle on the top that allows you to carry it easily with you, or hang it on a doorknob; you can also use the flat bottom to stand it up on any level surface.
