We are fortunate enough to live about 1 mile from my favorite state park. Spring Mill State Park is located just outside of the city of Mitchell in Lawrence County Indiana. It is a wonderful park that I have been visiting since I was very young and still enjoy today.
Spring Mill has many interesting things to do and see. My favorite is the restored Pioneer Village and Grist Mill. This is an actual village from the early 1800's that has been restored. You can walk from cabin to cabin and many small shops and see how people lived then. Some of the shops include a blacksmith, a candlemaker, a weaver, and an apothecary. On the weekends the village is inhabited by the townspeople who will talk about life in the 1800's. The Grist Mill is an actual working mill than still grinds corn into cornmeal which available to purchase.
My sons favorite thing at the park is the Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Memorial. Grissom was America's second man in space and was born and raised in Mitchell. He died in the Apollo 1 disaster. This is a wonderful memorial to learn a lot about Grissom as well as other astronauts and space travel.
Spring Mill has the usual areas for picnicing and playing games. It also has a pool that is available to visitors. It has two campgrounds, one electric with 187 sites and a primitive one with 36 sites. There are many hiking and bike trails and bike rental is available. There is a lake for fishing and boating and two caves, one of which has daily tours. Spring Mill also has a Nature Center.
My sisters held my wedding shower at the Spring Mill Inn.. This is a lovely 4 story inn built from Indiana limestone. Most of the rooms are furnished with handmade Amish decor. Room prices range from $54.00 to $98.00 depending on the room and season.
So if you are in the area, visit Spring Mill State Park. It is a great way to spend an enjoyable day or weekend.
