Last month, my old computer (which at the time was my good computer) aquired a trojan virus called AntiVirus XP 2008. This was a horrible problem and after many internet searches I purchased Spy Doctors Spyware & Virus removal program for $29.95.
The reason I purchased this particular program is that it said it could get rid of the particularly nasty virus that was on my computer. The program was easy to operate and it initially seemed to clear the Trojan off my computer and I was happy. That happiness only lasted 12 hours.
The virus would suddenly reappear on my computer and I would run Spy Doctor. It said it found/quarantined/destroyed the trojan and to be sure, I'd clear all my cookies, temperary internet files etc, reboot in safe mode with the virus remover at start up and all appeared clear. Until Windows started, which is when the horrible pop ups and error messages from the virus would start again.
Spy Doctor customer service never once answered an email inquiry. I not only was out the $30 or so bucks, but after 2 days the last resort was to do a complete facotry restore on my computer - but it was too late. After wiping out my system and trying to restore, my files were already corrupt and my computer would not even power on. A repair by a professional was quoted at over $400 - which was not feasible for a 6 year old computer (even if it was the top of the line back when it was purchased).
It appears with or without Spy Doctor's software I would have lost my computer due to this virus, I just really wish I would have saved the $30 to put towards my new computer instead!!
