Staples Hanging File Folders are an alternative to other brands, and they do cost less. They are lighter in weight, and probably won’t hold up to the kind of use that busy files in an office would receive. However, for archiving documents, or for home office use, they may be a lower-cost alternative.
Staples hanging folders are available in standard dull green, boxes of assorted colors (with three choices of selection, including pastels), or boxes of individual colors (yellow, red, blue, orange, purple, green, and gray). As with other brands, they three or five tab styles, letter or legal.
The wire bar for hanging the folders is firmly glued between the flaps of the top edge. It extends for the entire width of the folder. The cuts for the tabs have no “hanging chads, ” which can be really annoying when trying to fit the tabs in the slots. The tabs slide into the slots easily.
The bottoms have only two scored rows, as opposed to four on the regular Pendaflex folders, which allow you to bend the file to make it wider.
To compare the weight to the Pendaflex folder, the card stock is listed as the same weight (11 point stock), but the Staples folders feel lighter. The Sure Hook folders have plastic coating for reinforcement at the top and bottom.
The metal in the Staples folder bars is definitely thinner than Pendaflex. In all brands compared here, it is coated for easier movement on the frame rails. You can actually see the difference in the bars of the three brands in the photo.
The price is the lowest of the three I’ve compared.. Sure Hook folders cost about 45 cents more, per item. The Pendaflex folders are 28 cents more than Staples.
None of the ones I am comparing had an internal pocket for CD’s etc.
This is the first time I have tried the Staples folders. I think that they will be ideal for files that I need to put away to save, but won’t have to handle very often. Even though they are lighter weight, with fewer features, The savings is significant for files that aren’t going to be moved around or accessed very often. I find the color choices to be varied enough to help me color code my system.
