Have you heard that some sunscreens really are not good for your skin or your body as they are absorbed? I read a few articles before we went to Hawaii on vacation while doing research on sunscreen. One article I read was written by a Hawaiian resident who recommended using a surf shirt in place of sunscreen. This, of course, sent my research off in a new direction.
While sunscreen certainly has its place, using a shirt that blocks UV rays seemed like a great idea, especially for my ultra fair-skinned son. I found out that these shirts are worn by surfers and are called surf shirts or rash guards. Whatever you call them, they protect the skin from ultraviolet rays and, unlike sunscreen, there is no worry about it losing effectiveness. I loved the idea of a worry-free beach experience, so I ordered one for my sixteen year old son to swim and boogie board in.
I was more than pleased when it came in the mail. It is made of the coolest fabric that is very light and stretchy. It is so comfortable! The seams are smooth and sewn flat, so there is absolutely no rubbing.
The true test was on the beach in Kauai. Did my son use it? He did, and he enjoyed wearing it. You might think it would be hot, but it really doesn’t add weight or excessive warmth. Did he get a sunburn? He didn’t! And I know he would have if we had been depending on sunscreen, because we spent hours in the water! Did he ever feel uncomfortable in it? He did not, because it dries almost instantly once you leave the water.
