TechSmith SNAGIT is a screen capture software that is used to grab images or text from open windows on your desktop and allow you to edit them using features with the SNAGIT image editor. Available for Windows and MAC users, this software is great for those that have to prepare documents for training or customer support like eLearning tutorials, manuals, job aids, quick reference guides (QRGs) or knowledge libraries, where explanations of images, products, etc. will be included in the final published document.
So, what makes SNAGIT so great?
With all the features you get you would think that this would be an expensive software. At $49.99 it is a great value. Also, regularly they update SNAGIT adding new features. The cost of upgrading to the newer version is usually between $20 - $25. I'd only recommend upgrading if you will be using the new features, otherwise keep the version you have.
SNAGIT allows you to capture inputs like images, text, video and websites. You can set SNAGIT's capture specific things about the selected input like:
> the entire screen
> a selected window
> an active window
> a region
> a fixed region
> a menu
> recording audio
> keeping links
> what's on your clipboard
... and many more input modes are available!
Your input could then be enhanced through its plethora of editing features like:
> Image capture enhancements ~ colour depth, substitution and correction, resolution and scaling, add captions, borders, edge effects, watermarks and trims
> Text capture enhancements ~ layout, font settings and word wrap
> Website properties capture enhancements ~ search depth, min/max file size, file type and background inclusion
They can then be added to many different outputs like to the clipboard, saved as a file, sent to a program like MS Word, PowerPoint or Excel, or other program, printed or even sent by email Instant Messenger (IM) or to any server on the internet via FTP.
So now that you know what SNAGIT can do, let me tell you how easy it is to use. First, make sure what you want to capture is open on your computer desktop. Then, without minimizing what you want to capture, open SNAGIT. Select an input from the Basic Capture Profiles (e.g. a region, fixed region, menu, etc.) and click Capture. The SNAGIT window disappears, and you see a box explaining how to complete the capture. You simply follow the instructions to complete the capture. When complete, the capture appears in the Capture Preview window allowing you to make edits (add captions, arrows, stamps, borders, change colour, size, etc.) to what you've captured. Once you've finished editing your capture, choose your output (e.g. file, email, IM, Word, etc.) and click Done. That's all there is to it!
I've used SNAGIT for over 8 years and I have to truly say that this is one product that keeps on getting better. If you prepare training materials and documents like manuals, QRGs, Product Help Libraries, training, tutorials, etc then SNAGIT is for you. I've even used it enhance PowerPoint presentations and reports I've completed for class assignments. I highly recommend it for instructional designers, eLearning developers, teachers and students!
