I just spent 9 wonderful days in the catskills. My father lives in Liberty, New York which is part of Sullivan county in The Catskills. I love this region because you get the peacefull country, but you are really close to some great metropolitan areas as well.
The area also has great history. This region is home to the origional Woodstock in Bethel, New York and the new home of Woodstock in Socratese, New York. Most tourists visit in the winter to enjoy skiing the mountainous land. I favor the fall when the leaves start to change the mountains look like they are on fire with all the reds and yellows.
My boyfriend takes advantage of the great hunting season for both turkey and deer. We visit several times a year and each time he loves to spend time out on the lake fishing. There are many boat rental oportunities especially around White Lake.
Sullivan county has a huge fly fishing comunity. As soon as we start driving past Beaver Creek you can see all the fly fisherman lined up in the creek, and having great luck at it too. In the winter you can see tents on the ice for miles with people ice fishing.
There are many beautiful state parks and camping areas at low cost too. If you're feeling lucky you can try your gaming skills at the Monticello raceway. Soon they are opening "Entertainment City" which will be one of the biggest casino resorts in New York.
If your a fan of golfing there are some really prized golf courses in the area. This trip I learned that Sullivan county is the #1 artichoke provider for The North-East coast. YUM!
Just an hour away you can pop into NYC. A 2 hour drive you can visit New Jersey or Conneticut. I have been visiting the area since I was little and still I haven't seen all that the Catskills have to offer. The next visit we are visiting the off broadway theater and dinning at Vino. Then we will be off to Jeffersonville for the pumpkin festival and tractor parade. See you there!
