The House of God by Samuel Shem is a must read for all medical practitioners. This book has become a classic in medical school and residency culture. Many allusions are made to this book among physicians and medical students. It's a disturbing book in many ways because it reveals how insane the long work hours can be during medical training. It's very humorous at times, but has its touching moments.
It's the story of a young intern. It begins on vacation in France, and the young doctor who has just completed his internship flashes back. The reader is taken on a trip through the intern year with all of its insane ups and downs. The fat man is an unforgettable character. A gastroenterologist in the making, he's brilliant but very eccentric. You'll roll in the floor laughing at the fat man. This is a great book, and again, a must read if you work in the medical field.
