Take a good, close look at the picture. Go ahead. Look familiar? If it does, it's probably because that's a picture of Portland Head Light, Maine's oldest lighthouse, located in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
I have lived my whole life in Maine, right on the coast. I have also been visiting Fort Williams my whole life. I have so many memories from spending time there that I will always cherish, I even wanted to get married there, but it didn't work out. :(
Fort Williams was originally a military fortification used during many wars, including WWII, and was officially closed as such in 1963. In 1964 it was turned into a park for people to use and enjoy. You can still see the fortifications that were used in the park during its war days, you can even climb on some of the bases where cannons were mounted. The shelters and batteries are still mostly there, although most are closed and boarded for safety.
The views from this park are absolutely breathtaking. There are rolling hills of grass where you can fly kites, paths for walking along the rocks, or biking on pavement. There are picnic tables throughout the park, along with barbecue grills which you can use. There is a new playground towards the back of the park, and even a designated area for allowing your dog off the leash to run. There are tennis courts and ballfields as well. In the winter, many people like to skate on the pond, or go cross country skiing, or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the Maine coast.
On the left as you enter the park is a parking area which is in front of a small beach, which is great for lounging and playing in the surf, when it's warm enough. You can often see seals popping their heads above water, or scuba divers climbing out after a swim.
There is also a beautiful old stone mansion, called Goddard Mansion, whose frame is still intact. The insides are mostly gone, and much of the stonework is starting to fall, but you can easily picture the grandeur it once possessed.
If ever you are in Maine and are looking for a nice spot to visit, Fort Williams should definitely be on your list. While you're there, make sure you take one more picture of the world's most photographed lighthouse (according to many), as well!
