AAA (American Auto Club) Tour Books are great for planning and executing road trips. They are helpful in locating hotels, motels, and restaurants. They are free (to AAA members)!
AAA Tour Books are also a useful resource for planning destination vacations by providing information on attractions, points of interest, and restaurants.
The books vary in composition. They may contain a specific area (such as Las Vegas or Washington DC), sometimes they contain a single state, and often they contain a group of states.
Typically, there are some highlights in the beginning - including major attractions, recreation areas, and demographic information. Then there is usually descriptive information about the major towns and cities. Large cities and attractions (such as National Parks) typically have a highlights or spotting map. However, if you know you will be spending time in an area it is useful to get a detailed AAA map (also free to members!).
The hotel/motel listings are quite helpful. They include rate and detailed amenity information, rating, phone number, and sufficient directional information to find the property from major highways.
Though I also use other resources when planning a trip, these Tour Books are very helpful to take along to have for reference.
