I just finished reading The prize Winner Of Definace Ohio: How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less, By Terry Ryan. I really enjoyed this book. The story is interesting: A woman has 10 children and an alcoholic husband in the 1950's- 1960's era. His paychecks are hardly enough to support his large family. His wife Mrs. Ryan enters a variety of contests, writing jingles and poems to make ends meet.
Despite their status of poverty stricken, Mrs. Ryan teaches her children that anything is possible. She manages to win enough contests to put a down payment on a home, she wins several cars, and provides a great Christmas for her family.
The story is entertaining, filled with many of Mrs. Ryan's entries into contests, and some of the original ads, also photos of the family are included.
This book reads very fast, and it will put a smile on your face a few times. It is a lovely tribute to a woman who raised her family and instilled hope into each of her children against all odds. I would recommend this book to anyone.
