I love the original version of the film over the newest version with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick; in my opinion Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder were so much better. There’s more of an innocent feel to the film that the new version completely lacks; Lane and Broderick seemed bored.
I prefer the songs in the original film; Springtime for Hitler is far and above better in the original film; the entire scene is a scream and in the new version it was sacrificed and condensed. Personally watching Dick Shawn play Hitler is hysterical and the new version just lost all of that; and of course the 2 actors playing the director and his lover are much funnier as well.
I highly recommend watching this film and then comparing it to the new version; I think you’ll agree that the original is a lot better. Mel Brooks early stuff is legend in its brilliance and this is the right up there with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
The Deluxe edition doesn’t have many special features but it does have Mel Brooks doing the commentary which is certainly worth listening to, he’s a funny, funny man.
