After choosing my new refrigerator and calculating for the 6% sales tax that we have in PA, I had exactly $400 left that I could afford to spend on a new stove for my new house. Working with the same salesman at Lowe's who had helped me buy the refrigerator, he showed me the available free standing electric ranges in my price range. He told me that the best value for the money was the Tappan 30 inch Free Standing Electric Range, which at $298 was a full $100 cheaper than the comparable GE 30 inch Free Standing Electric Range, and yet the Tappan offered all of the same features as the GE.

But what an ugly duckling!! I asked the salesman if the manufacturer had run out of white oven doors that they had to put a black oven door on the Tappan. I couldn't imagine anyone actually designing a stove to look like this on purpose. I really had to think about this purchase carefully. Pros: The Tappan was just under $300, had a roomy 5.3 cubic foot self-cleaning oven with a window in the oven door, and had a storage drawer for my baking tins and casserole dishes. The GE was more attractive as an all black range, and also had roomy 5.3 cubic foot self-cleaning oven with a window in the oven door, and a storage drawer for my baking tins and casserole dishes. Cons: The Tappan was multi-colored, which was going to take some getting used to. The GE was $100 more expensive, and I'm not that rich.

My practical sense won out over my artistic sense, and I selected the Tappan 30 inch Free Standing Electric Range. A pretty paint job just didn't justify the $100 expense, and the GE 30 inch Electric Range didn't offer anything else that the Tappan 30 inch Electric Range didn't offer as well. As it turned out, I made the perfect artistic color choice for my kitchen, and I've grown to love my ugly duckling Tappan Electric Range. The black oven door ties together with my black refrigerator and black dishwasher. And the white stovetop ties perfectly with the white stovetop fan, light yellow walls, and light beige countertops, giving a very bright and clean, airy feeling to my stovetop cooking area.
