The Unseen Hand by Ralph Epperson is an extremely intriguing book. Epperson is a revisionist historian, i.e. a conspiracy theorist of sorts. He believes that major events: volatility in fincancial markets, wars, assasinations, etc. are events that are created by a small group of super-elite individuals that control the world. The power group supposedly has it's roots in secret societies like the free masons. I found the book to be quite fascinating.
Much time is spent explaining the steps along the way as a society evolves into a socialistic or communistic state. This portion of the book was very interesting, something not really explained in basic required college history courses.
Many events throughout the course of American history are recounted under a different light with motives of those seeking power or wealth unveiled. It's a crazy book, banks loaning money, and manipulating currency levels to devaluate assetts and create economic strife, which totally obliterates the middle class. Epperson supplies decent evidence that such things have occured many times throughout history. I was forced to educate myself on some economic principles while reading the book.
Again, it's fascinating. Reading the book is the only way to get the full effect.
