I actually was using this Thermos 18 cube ice mat on my ankle when I recently had my first attack of gout. My husband bought me two of them and they are extremely cold. I would not recommend putting these directly on your skin because they are intended for use with coolers to help keep your food and drinks cold.
The ice pack was recommended by our Pharmacist because it is actually bendable between the "ice cubes" and wrapped pretty well over the top of my ankle and foot. But we did use a towel between the ice packs and the skin.
They are filled with purified water and still stay flexible when the cubes are frozen, which makes them easy to mold and wrap around foods and drinks in the cooler.
These mats measure 9" x 12".
These are also compact and flexible enough to use in lunch boxes.
Of course for me, I needed it for helping to reduce the swelling, pain and redness the gout was creating in my ankle and foot. It really did help and was definitely colder than my other ice packs meant specifically for muscle pain.
One side of the mat is an aqua color, while the reverse side is silver. This silver side apparently helps keep the cubes insulated because it is a double layer of insulation.
So whether you are using this for your drinks, food or medical purposes, I'd say they are multi-use and are worth the money.
