When you purchase a new boat you must purchase the power separately. We purchased our Alumacraft 14ft Flat Bottom Fishing Boat and opted to purchase a used Evinrude 15 hp boat motor on eBay. New boat motors of this size run upwards of $2, 000. We got a deal at $700!
After a lot of research, biding wars, and shipping heartaches, our Evinrude finally arrived. This motor is the perfect power option for our Jon boat.
The motor usually starts by the third pull and purrs like a kitten. It has a forward and reverse drive with throttle acceleration. We can run this 15 hp Evinrude all day long with our 6-gallon fuel tank only half full. It takes a fuel to oil ratio of 50:1. For the speed buffs, the motor will push our boat, loaded with gear, at 15-20 miles per hour.
This Evinrude can be used for trolling as it has superior low speed control. The throttle accelerates smoothly off the control arm without speed loss or acceleration while steering--it's not touchy.
The Evinrude also has a shallow drive option. This is perfect for cruising unknown river water. You never know if you will hit a tree stump or run aground. The shallow drive switch frees the lower unit. If you do hit something, you are less likely to damage your lower unit or prop. The motor just bounces up and out of the way.
Evinrude motors last for years. Talk about durability, we have a friend who owns a similar motor going on 45 years of age. Ours is an '82 model and I'm sure we will get many more years out of it. You can see from the pictures it's as clean as a whistle and ready to fish time and time again.
We give Evinrude a hearty pat on the back for engineering such superior motors that stand the test of time. We would definitely buy an Evinrude again.
Update On May 05, 2009: I added a video so you can listen to this Evinrude purr, see how fast it pushes our Alumacraft with two adult passengers, a cooler with ice, and all our fishing gear. Enjoy!
