This little vintage figurine was just too cute to pass up a few years ago. Alice in Wonderland was made for Disney in 1960 by Wales China in Japan, so she is officially 50 years old this year. I purchased her at an estate sale for only $5.00 but I have seen her go on Ebay for close to $30.00.
Alice stands about 5-1/4" tall and is painted in the outfit we all know which is a light blue dress with a white apron, and her blond hair is pulled back with a bow. She is poised with her hands outstretched as if she is reaching for something, maybe the Cheshire Cat? I think the detail on her is excellent down to the expression on her face. Even though 50 years old, the glaze on this ceramic Alice in Wonderland figurine is still perfect with no crazing whatsoever.
There are two labels on the bottom, one which states Walt Disney Productions 1960, and the other one says Wales made in Japan. In doing some research on the internet I only found two other Disney figurines made by Wales during the 60's, Cinderella and Snow White, but that's not to say there aren't more. Wales China was a manufacturer of so-called cheap items mass-produced in large quantities under the main brand, "Wales China". Lots of children's items, like these Disney figurines, miniature tea sets, and China lace figures were made and carry the "Wales China" sticker (in gold or silver), as found on the base of my Alice in Wonderland figurine.
This is my one and only figurine or collectible that has to do with Alice in Wonderland but I loved it as soon as I saw it. Since my name is Alice, it was meant for me!!
