This is a great way to get started with programming in Visual Basic. Even if you aren’t a kid, it’s a very useful book. It’s targeted towards kids so the language is simple and it moves somewhat slowly, but it’s still a great start for anyone.

Assuming they still provide it, you can get the “demo” of the book for free. It only has a few of the chapters, but it gives you a good idea of whether or not you want to buy it. I believe it costs about $20 to buy the whole book. The complete version has 10 “classes” (chapters), along with a bonus class with extra projects and stuff.

The book assumes you are completely new to programming, so everything is explained quite clearly. It’s very helpful in beginning to understand the concepts of programming. As you move through the classes, more complicated things are explained. There are lots of code examples throughout each class to help you understand what is going on. At the end of each class, there is an example program you can create step-by-step to use what you’ve learned. Suggestions are also provided for trying things on your own.

By the end, you get a good basic understanding of Visual Basic and programming in general. Enough knowledge is provided to help you venture off on your own and continue to learn more programming. Once you get through this guide, just going out and trying things is the best way to keep learning. That’s what I did, and now I consider myself a pretty good programmer. The nice thing is, all programming is essentially the same. The way you do things is the same, it’s just a matter of the differences in typing commands, or the syntax. So once you learn Visual Basic, it’s pretty simple to learn other languages.

If you have a kid that wants to learn how to program, I highly suggest this. Visual Basic 4.0 – 6.0 (those covered in this book) are not free. However, Microsoft’s latest version has a free Express version. This has pretty much all you would need unless you are a professional, advanced programmer. There is a Kidware book for the latest version too, so you might want to check that out.
