Trader Joe's French Truffles are smooth and tasty. Purists might deny the validity of the 'Truffle' name, since they are not made with chocolate ganache. However, their appearance, cocoa dusting, and texture is very similar to their classic cousins at a fraction of the cost. Each 8.8 ounce (250g) box contains about 30 truffles (about 10 cents a piece).
I am not sure if these truffles are available all year - they may be a seasonal item. They definitely sell very well prior to Christmas when the stores often provide samples. The red box is a nice package and inside is an attractive mylar bag. I bought six boxes this year (and gave away most of them as gifts). These truffles are probably not good for people who are counting their calories or watching their saturated fat (16 grams for 5 pieces), but I don't feel too bad if I just have one or two.
Trader Joe's is a privately owned grocery store chain with about 340 stores (about half of them in California). The stores are not typically large (and are not open 24 hours), but they have a good selection of inexpensive 'gourmet' foods, pastas, nuts, and wine. They have many products which are made by outside companies under the Trader Joe's label. They are definitely worth a visit.
