The Walt Disney Classics Collection (WDCC) is a line of porcelain figurines that are amazing 3D creations of some of Disney's most famous characters. The first set of figurines was introduced back in 1992 and since then several hundred different sculptures have been made. Some depict just a character and other have pieces that go along with several different figurines and create a whole scene from a movie. The figurines are released in regular editions, limited editions and special editions. Every year new pieces are introduced and other are retired. The pieces all are stamped on the bottom with a symbol that tells in what year that piece was actually produced since many pieces are in production for several years.
In 1993 they introduced a collectors membership club called the Walt Disney Collectors Society. There was a fee to join it each year and in return you got a figurine that was made just for the club members as well as special club information packets and an opportunity to purchased pieces that were available only to the members. We joined the club in 1999 and were members for 2 years. We collect very specific pieces and tend to focus only on the Disney Villains so the pieces the club offered were just not what we were looking for and we decided not to renew.
These figurines are very delicate looking and the creators seem to like to push the envelope to see how thin they can make some of the pieces. While they are beautiful to look at, I absolutely hate to touch them or even to clean around them because I am afraid I am going to break them.
The figurine I am going to tell you about in my pictures is the famous Captain Hook. The name of this piece is "I've got you this time". The piece was first introduced in 1992 and was retired in 2000. Hook stands 5 inches tall not including his sword. The tip of his sword and the hand guard are made of metal but everything else is made of porcelain. The sword screws into a place on his hand and is removable for putting him in a box. I have noticed over the years that there are a few small places where this metal has tarnished some. It is not very bad and does not distract from the rest of the piece. His red jacket and purple pants are done in vibrant colors. The details on his face are incredible and true to the film. He is one of our favorite pieces.
Each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and some of the limited edition pieces are numbered, Hook was just a regular edition piece. They also come to you in a very well padded box and I am always amazed that they do not get broken in shipping. My biggest complaint about owning these is cleaning them. They are so delicate, I will not do it, my husband has to do it. He goes very slowly with a soft cloth being careful not to snag it on anything. Captain Hook with his pointy sword is always a challenge.
If you are a Disney fan, these are a wonderful collectable to own. We love Captain Hook and the other villains but if bad guys and gals are not your thing, there are plenty of other characters to choose from.
