Following the previous mentioned trilogy, Turtledove had the North win this time. However, the North allied with Germany, took over Canada, and is engaging in a fierce battle between the Socialists and Republicans, and in Utah, a mormon rebellion sparks up.

In the South, Jake Featherston starts the freedom party which is remarkable similar to the Nazi party of the same time frame. The time period here goes from the end of World War 1 until 1941 and sees both areas of the country gearing up for war against each other while the North fights a war with Japan and tries to maintain its control of the area.

As the third book in the trilogy ends, Featherston becomes the president and starts taking back land which the socialist government in the USA is too afraid to fight back against.
