ING consistently has the best interest rates for checking, savings and CD accounts. Yes, it is an on-line bank, but ever since they have added a checking account with a debit card they have become unbeatable in my book. They are FDIC insured, so I do not have to worry about my savings disappearing and with the stock market being as wobbly as it has been lately, their CD accounts look quite attractive. I have been with them since 2005 when I was referred by a friend on a forum, hey, it said I could get $25 for opening an account with them so I was willing to investigate. Since then I have and still do refer my friends to ING and I would, even if they decided to stop their ongoing referral program one day.
I know other banks offer referral gifts and cash too but where else can I get a great interest rate including for my checking account, regardless of how much money I keep in there. The minimum deposit of $250 to open a new account is a new requirement but you do not need to maintain that balance. There are no fees. Surprisingly enough there is still no minimum amount required to get the best interest rate in my savings or CD account. ING also offers mortgages and equity lines of credit which may be worth a look for you too.
I do bank at more than one institution because I like to take advantage of the great auto loan rates at my credit union for instance, but their interest rates for my savings and checking are laughable. To me it is a good idea to look around and find the best deal for your money.
I've had occasion to speak with customer service at ING on the phone and also had e-mail exchanges and was pleasantly surprised about the good and speedy customer service I received. It's a great bank and if you are thinking of socking away some money at a good return look no further.
