Square is known for making great RPGs, but back in 1998, they released one of their most beloved games, Xenogears. Does the game truly deserve the hype?
The graphics in this game really display the power of the Playstation. In the game, your characters are displayed in 2D, while robots and huge enemies, along with the backgrounds, are displayed in 3D. Suprisingly, the two mesh together really well. Compared to today's standards, the graphics are actually kind of primitive, but when age is taken into consideration, they look great.
The music in the game is great, and was done by the same composer as Chrono Cross. The music really fits the atmosphere in the game and just feels really epic.
The game itself is really fun. The battles consist of you fighting your enemy in a turn based battle. There are no menus, just attacking. Triangle is weak, square is medium, and X is fierce. The battles are always engaging and allow the game to remain very fun.
When it comes to the story, I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're not ready for a huge, epic, engrossing story, you shouldn't play Xenogears. Lots of it is really philosophical and deep, and if you're not ready for that, or not a fan, you should just pass up Xenogears. It gets REALLY hard to understand later on.
If you're a fan of RPGs, go for Xenogears, if you can still find it. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves RPGs, a deep story, or games in general!
