I think that the Yamaha FG-402 is a great beginner acoustic guitar. As with any musical instrument, I would always suggest that you play the instrument in person to get a good "feel" for the sound and other qualities of the instrument to see if they suit your needs.
I got this guitar back in 1997 or 1998, and it is a sturdy, well-made guitar that has stood the test of time. When I played this guitar, I really liked the feel and the sound of this guitar when compared to others in the same price range (I think I played 15-20 guitars that day!).
I've changed the strings a couple of times, and it has been played by a number of friends over the years. It's moved across a number of states, and it still sounds great! If you're looking for something affordable for a young budding musician, I would suggest taking a look at the Yamaha line.
