Because I am a diabetic, my physician wants my cholesterol under good control. I've made up my mind, based on research I've done, that I do not want to take statins. Other than niacin, there are not many alternatives. Every doctor seems to be a fan of statins, but so far, I've refused to take them. So my doctor prescribed Zetia.
Zetia works differently than statins. Statins work mainly with the liver. Zetia works in the digestion system, and helps to block the absorption of cholesterol. It has worked well for me.
However, now I have some concerns about Zetia. There are current studies suggesting that Zetia does not help prevent strokes or heart attacks, which is one of the primary reasons to take cholesterol medicine. There are also concerns that it may cause live damage. Tonight I read that there are concerns about cancer.
This is the kind of thing that makes me so mad. I currently take nine prescription medicines, and the only reason I do is because I am convinced that each one is necessary. (They are for conditions such as hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, acid reflux, and things that cannot be ignored. ) But I am not willing to take these kinds of risks. When you try to explain this to most physicians, you are labeled as a "trouble maker."
However, with the dangerous side effects of so many drugs these days, and with the drug companies actually knowing sometimes that there is a problem, and not disclosing it, we have to protect ourselves. I will be discussing this drug with my doctor (along with some others) during my next visit. The last time I questioned some of the things that I had heard about Zetia, she said we would wait and see what further findings determined. But I don't know that I want to continue to wait that long.
